Martin & Miami: An island-hopping duo that stole our hearts

Some runners arrive at Archipelago Trail Run with a race plan and a finish line in mind. Martin arrived with Miami, his nine-year-old rescue dog and trusted trail-running companion. Together, they came to the Zadar Archipelago for the first time in 2025 and quickly became a memorable part of our island-running community.

From a sunrise catamaran journey to crossing the finish line together in Sali, their first Archipelago adventure gave them far more than another race result. It gave them beautiful memories, new friendships and precious time together.

An adventure discovered on Instagram

Martin first came across Archipelago Trail Run while scrolling through Instagram. The event immediately caught his attention, but it was the idea of running along the coastlines of different islands that ultimately convinced him to register.

“It felt like the kind of island experience we usually look for on holiday, only combined with trail running,” he explains.

When Martin thinks back to his first Archipelago Trail Run, it is not just the trails that come to mind. He remembers the beautiful islands, the friendly participants and the warm, relaxed atmosphere created by the event crew.

“We came to the islands hoping to have a good time and create some nice memories. We left with more than we could ever have asked for.”

From darkness into sunrise

There were many unforgettable moments during their weekend, including crossing the finish line together in Sali. But for Martin, one experience stands above the rest: the early-morning catamaran transfer to Dugi Otok.

The journey began in the dark, with runners boarding the boat before sunrise and setting out across the archipelago without knowing exactly what the day would bring. Then the first light appeared over the Adriatic, and the islands slowly came into view.

“Watching the sunrise from the catamaran before arriving on Dugi Otok for the first race was magical,” says Martin.

The boat journey is what makes the island-hopping format so special to him. It turns the transfer to the start into part of the experience and gives the entire weekend a sense of adventure that feels completely different from a traditional trail race.

“There is a real holiday feeling to it: being on the islands, travelling by boat and running in sunny but pleasantly mild weather. The whole atmosphere was amazing. Everyone was friendly and laid-back, and the organization team was outstanding.”

Meet Miami, Martin’s partner in crime

Miami became part of Martin’s running adventures seven years ago. Martin chose him from several rescue dogs, hoping to find the perfect companion for life on the trails. From the moment he adopted him, the two were inseparable. Just four weeks later, they ran their first marathon together.

Their bond became even stronger when Miami underwent surgery for a cancerous tumour three years ago. The prognosis was difficult, but Miami kept doing what he loves most: running, exploring and staying close to Martin.

“The vets gave him only three to six more months to live after the operation,” Martin remembers. “But superhero dogs live forever.”

For Miami, a race weekend on the islands is pure excitement. He loves meeting new people and happily accepts every cuddle and bit of attention that comes his way. He also enjoys travelling by boat, running the trails, crossing the finish line and cooling off with a swim afterwards. And, of course, the snacks at the aid stations are another highlight.

Arriving solo, leaving with new friends

Many runners hesitate to register for an event if they do not have someone to travel with. Martin is comfortable setting out on his own because, as he says, he is never really alone when Miami is by his side.

Miami also has a talent for bringing people together. His open and friendly nature helps Martin break the ice, meet fellow runners and quickly feel part of the community.

“I would definitely recommend Achipealgo Trail Run to someone considering a solo trip.I met so many nice and friendly people, and as it is a 3 day experience you meet them on the next day etc. even run parts together with them on both stages. Also accommodation on the island is very affordable as it is off season. Just this week I have also met several people I got to know on the Archipealgo Trail Run at the Soca Outdoor Festival in Slovenia and that was a really nice feeling to see them again.”  he says.

Creating memories, one trail at a time

Last year, Martin and Miami completed the Brooks 2-stage Middle race. Their plans for this October are still open, as a trip to Corsica may take place at the same time. If they do return, Martin is considering a shorter distance so that ten-year-old Miami can slow down and enjoy every part of the experience.

For Martin, choosing Archipelago Trail Run has never been only about entering another race. It is about sharing an adventure with Miami, spending quality time together and enjoying life to the fullest.

His advice to anyone thinking about joining for the first time is simple: ”Do it! It’s a no-brainer. We will definitely be back next year for sure!”
